The role and team
Specsavers is creating a Cloud Platforms function as part of its multi‑year cloud transformation. Cloud Platforms will be responsible for building and managing reusable, automated, secure, and cost‑efficient cloud services, including governance, optimisation, and ongoing platform maintenance. Working closely with global and regional stakeholders and partners, the team’s purpose is to deliver a world‑class cloud platform that enables real business value while balancing speed, cost, and quality.
As a Senior Cloud Engineer, you’ll support and improve our multi‑cloud platforms by automating, optimising, and maintaining cloud services. You’ll work closely with engineering, QA, operations, and external partners to ensure reliable, scalable deployments. The role involves driving innovation, leading platform improvements, mentoring junior engineers, and contributing to technical decisions while providing expert guidance across projects and teams.
Some of the outcomes you will deliver:
- Deliver secure, automated Azure landing zones and reusable cloud foundations (subscriptions, networking, identity, policy, logging) aligned to global governance standards.
- Embed security-by-design and compliance into Azure platform controls (Azure Policy, Key Vault, Defender for Cloud), including secrets, vulnerability, and configuration management.
- Improve observability across Azure services (Splunk, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights, dashboards) and reduce repeat incidents through root-cause analysis and remediation.
- Drive cost optimisation in Azure by implementing tagging/chargeback principles, rightsizing, and identifying high-impact savings opportunities using Azure Cost Management with stakeholders.
- Uplift Azure platform standards by introducing or refining engineering practices (peer review, testing, release management, runbooks) and ensuring services are production-ready.
Essential skills and experience you will bring:
- A minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar role, with expert hands‑on proficiency in Microsoft Azure
- Strong knowledge of Azure governance and platform foundations (Azure landing zones, management groups/subscriptions, RBAC, Azure Policy, Azure Monitor).
- Good understanding of Azure networking (VNets, peering, private endpoints, DNS, firewalling) and hybrid connectivity concepts.
- Strong security fundamentals in Azure, including Microsoft Entra ID, managed identities, Key Vault, Defender for Cloud, and secure secrets/certificates management.
- Operational excellence in Azure covering monitoring, incident response, production support, and cost optimisation practices.
- Strong technical skills, including Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Ability to work autonomously while providing technical leadership, effectively engaging, mentoring, and influencing technical teams and stakeholders.
- This is a Melbourne‑based, stand‑alone role within a global team, you will have the flexibility to work across different time zones.
