What You’ll Do
Purpose of the role
The Manager of Retail Learning and Development is responsible for implementing the strategic vision and execution of learning initiatives across retail operations. This role combines expertise in adult learning principles with an in-depth understanding of retail operations to design, implement, and evaluate training programs that enhance employee performance, customer experience, and business outcomes.
The Manager Retail Learning and Development acts as a bridge between organizational goals and Retail Store colleague development, ensuring that training aligns with company values, and operational need both in new and existing store locations.
Key Responsibilities
The Manager of Retail Learning and Development plays a pivotal role in driving effective learning initiatives and supporting retail growth. Key responsibilities include:
- New Store Launch Support: Facilitate and manage the timelines and processes for new store launches, including providing comprehensive support for onboarding and commissioning activities to ensure a smooth start for new stores.
- Strategic Training Oversight: Maintain operational oversight of strategic initiatives affecting retail stores, delivering tailored training solutions to support successful implementation.
- Learning Solution Development: Collaborate with Learning & Development peers and the Central Operations Team to design and deliver learning programs through virtual, face-to-face, or self-led formats, supporting all stages of store development and growth.
- Promote Specsavers Academy Utilization: Increase engagement with the Specsavers Academy by driving the adoption of self-led learning paths tailored for Partners and their store teams.
- Improve Partner Accountability: Contribute to a culture of accountability among Partners for team-member development, ensuring a consistent focus on induction, core training, and management development initiatives.
- Professional and Technical Growth: Actively participate in ongoing professional development and contribute to the optical and technical upskilling of the broader Retail Training Manager (RTM) team.
Regional Training Manager Delivery and Oversight
- Provide national operational coordination for RTMs across Canada.
- Provide role onboarding and oversee the initial and continued professional development program for both new and current RTMs
Regional Manager (Retail) & Clinical Support Consultant Support
- Proactively work with Clinical Support Consultants (CSC) and Regional Relationship Managers (RRM) to ensure a ‘one team’ approach to Partner and Store Development, where appropriate.
- Give feedback to the RRMs on any people development challenges identified, as well as supporting training remediation plans where appropriate.
- Support Director of Central Operations and the wider Support Office team on national and local people development initiatives
Learning Experience Development
- Partner with the Design team to support the initial creation, execution and ongoing evaluation of the Learning & Development Strategic Plan
- Partner with Head of Partner Development to deliver key outputs from the National Learning & Development capability framework, competency map and career roadmap across Retail Store roles
- Oversee the creation and ongoing delivery of a Train The Trainer program to support the National Learning Framework
- Support, coach and mentor new and existing RTMs through the full Retail Employee learning lifecycle
- Act as Lead RTM for strategic initiatives affecting Retail Partners and Stores
- In partnership with Head of Retail L&D, co-create and oversee the delivery of the In-Store Trainer program in support of accelerated growth across Canada

- Proven expertise in facilitating and delivering training through both virtual and face-to-face methodologies, catering to individuals as well as small and large groups
- Strong coaching and mentoring skills, fostering growth and development in team members and peers
- In-depth knowledge of Adult Learning Theories and Principles, ensuring the design and delivery of effective learning experiences
- Preferable to have comprehensive experience with the full ADDIE cycle (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) to create impactful learning programs
- Advanced technical expertise paired with a strong understanding of the optical industry
- A customer-centric mindset and a genuine passion for supporting the personal and professional development of others
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to influence, persuade, and inspire diverse audiences.
- Strong self-management capabilities, enabling effective planning, prioritization, and delivery of a demanding workload
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and rapidly growing business environment
